LIMITED RUN: BURUNDI Ngozi Turihamwe Dark Roast

$48.50

Turihamwe, which means “together” in Kirundi, is a high-quality coffee produced by 600 women coffee farmers and processed in Burundi’s first washing station built and owned by women farmers.

Jeanine Niyonzima-Aroian, the founder of JNP Coffees, is without a doubt one of the most influential individuals in Burundi coffee today. Jeanine also funded Burundi Friends International, a not-for-profit funding educational and economic empowerment programs for rural Burundians, now in its 13th year. While washing stations pay more for premium harvests, JNP coffee goes a step further, returning second payments to farmers and investing in opportunities for education and community building.

The coffee cherry is floated for density and visible defects prior to depulping and fermentation. The wet parchment is then sorted by density in concrete washing channels, then dried first in the shade, then in the open air with parchment piled into pyramids. The piles are flattened and re-shaped each day as a form of incremental air exposure to slowly and evenly dry the coffee and lock in the final moisture.
